Directed by Dhana Sekaran, the film doesn't surprise us with its revenge-drama plot; but the performances, the way of handling the script, the cinematography and the emotional undertones make it a film worth watching. The movie starts with the murder of the father of twins - Bhaskar and Natrayan (whose' elder versions are played by Nandha) - by Bose Kaalai (Sarathkumar) which is followed by his jailing. Bose's wife is played by Raadhika Sarathkumar, who shines in her role as Chandra. The film proceeds to depict the leaving of Chandra along with their kids: Selvam and Mangai to Chennai, to start their lives anew. The interactions between the kids and their uncle (Balaji Sakthivel) are very endearing, and events progress to the return of Bose from jail, the familial complications, unlikely friendships and everything in between. The premise also has the subplots of Selvam (Vikram Prabhu) and Preetha (Madonna Sebastian) and the triangle of Ramanathan (Shanthanu Bhagyaraj), Mangai (Aishwarya Rajesh) and Kalyan (Amitash), could have been given their own time to develop but were less effective due to the limited screentime.
The nuances and the inner rage and desolation of Bose which was powerfully depicted by Sarathkumar will leave you rooting for him till the end. The stellar performances from the well-refined cast and moments of subtlety, such as the interactions between Bose and Chandra, jail visits, bickering between the siblings, random moments of laughter and the dynamic between the characters as they intermingle prove to be some of the strongest parts of the film, enhanced by vivid shots and the brilliant score by Sid Sriram. Though having a cliché plotline, Vaanam Kottatum compensates with the heartwarming sequences, amazing cast, and beautiful cinematography. All in all, a must-watch!
