As we all know, the entire world is facing a dangerous crisis today‒ the Coronavirus or COVID-19. It’s brought the entire world to a standstill; the oil prices have gone down significantly which hasn’t been seen since 2001, the gold prices tumbled in March, the Dow Jones Index‒ a stock market index that measures the stock performance of 30 large companies listed on stock exchanges in the United States has declined by around 28% between February 11 and March 12, 2020, the tourism industry has been hit the hardest as over 100 countries have imposed travel restrictions, not to mention the growing number of deaths all over the world. As of March 28, 2020, there have been 23,495 deaths caused due to the novel virus. All of these could lead to a worldwide recession with numerous jobs being in danger. It has been declared a pandemic by the WHO and has pushed countries to gear up to deal with the impact.
The virus, essentially, is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered corona virus, says WHO. These viruses use RNA instead of DNA and have spikes on their surface which aid them in attaching themselves to the potential host. There are 6 previously discovered corona viruses, for example, SARS ( severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS ( middle eastern respiratory syndrome), the COVID-19 is the seventh corona virus. Now that we have all the data and information about the virus out of the way, let’s know the good effects that have come as a result of this deadly visitor‒ since many of us, if not all have been quarantined with family or friends, as a result, we have been able to bond with them, the pollution levels have reduced significantly, with the industries shut down there has been a noticeable drop in carbon emissions all over the world( 25% in China at the beginning of the year), fishes, which were previously not seen due to water pollution and movement of boats, can be found in the now clear and blue waters of Venice. These are just some of the effects; if we continue to have the same lifestyle we might even reach our previously ‘impossible’ goal of net-zero emissions by 2025. Stay safe, stay at home and wash your hands frequently with alcohol-based soap. We’re in this together.
