I can bluntly come to the point that I wanted to deliver and finish my stance. But as the legend says "Introduction first and matters next", I've prepared a lot for a dramatic intro. Hence, don't hate me for all that poetic touch put into it. Oh! I almost forgot to mention the important part. The below article or an opinion to be precise is solely meant from the perspective of an Indian. I'm not sure if it is the same in other countries. If so, do share your thoughts in the comments. A drum-roll is totally necessary for all the work I've put into this. Since no one is impressed, I'll throw away my pride and bang it myself.
Okay Nithiya! enough with the drama already!! Could you please get to the freakin point?? If that's what you're thinking....I'm sorry but I really am trying to think how to start. But as always, here's to my dumb intro.....
To begin with, let's scratch from the surface. And that is none other than what the majority of the people all around the world love to hear. Hear pure Art, hear the Sound in Silence, hear the Dynamics with core elements of pitch, move to the Rhythmic Metronome and sway to the qualities of it's Timbre and Texture. Which is why it is also called an emotion that you express through harmonic frequencies that unlocks the chambers to joy and the vaults to serendipity. Yes! you guessed it right. It's Music! that everyone yearns to listen to anytime, anywhere and in any circumstances of the emotional roller coaster we go through. Music heals us all and cleanses your thoughts with optimism and power to start your day fresh.
I'm sure everyone has beliefs of their own. Likewise, I strongly believe that there's a soul around us that we never realize. And that's the beauty of what music does to us. Music in and in itself is just a soul that rises in waves of crests and troughs vibrating in all ranges of amplitude.
But lately, why do I feel like loosing that soulfulness as we pass year by year? Is it just me or is the world drifting apart from the tunes that sounded Mellifluous back until the 90's. Not to mention the 2000's which were equally pleasant and harmonious. I've thought about it and the answer was pretty simple. This quick upheaval in the music industry was all due to the burgeoning era of none other than Electronic Music.
Electronic music has created such an impact in the industry that not only you or me but anyone in the world is now capable of hitting the billboard charts. But, That doesn't say anywhere that what your creating is soulful and passionate or one in a million. That kind of precision comes with live artistry, experience and knowledge of the wide varieties of sound elements we've invented through the decades. Diving into the shark tank directly is aimless! You might survive but, you will never know how to tame it until you've come prepared.
A simple drum pad machine literally comprises the tunes to all of the instruments that we play and could be enough for you to create a score. But trust me, it may sound catchy and might be on trend at the moment. Later, when you wish to listen to it again, you probably won't enjoy it as much as you enjoy the classics till date. There is one thing though that is totally not under the dependence of electronic music and those are FILM SCORES/ BGM. Film score composers still feel the need to inspire us the old fashioned way which is to Record a symphony, Record instrumentally. In short, Record EMOTION of the soul that wanders in our ears.
In Indian music industry, the system is set up in a totally different way that led to the ignorance of artists that create singles and albums. The soundtrack is first launched before the movie is released. Through this, playback singers and music directors are recognized and appreciated. This really is a great downmarket for the people who would love to establish their art individually and for the people who wish to move solo. Personally, I feel there is a bit of recognition for solo and underground artists right now than before. But, we are also missing something else. Have you ever keenly listened to the amount of work and beauty put out in film scores? If so, have you ever seen that person honored for the piece of art that he's put behind the film.
There is not a single award show or a ceremony that entitles only for background scores. If an actor is awarded the best for a film, the score behind the action also plays a major role in helping the actor express the character's behavior on point. Why isn't there a category to nominate best film score composers ( like the legendary Hans Zimmer for INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT, INTERSTELLAR or Alan Silvestri for the revolutionary series of AVENGERS or Justin Hurwitz for WHIPLASH and many more....).
Hey! Grammy's, Billboards, AMA's , MTV, and all the other award ceremonies that appreciate musical talents, It's time to get non-political and start to identify and appreciate true talents. It's time to acknowledge composers waiting to be recognized. It's time for a change. A change the world would happily accept and applaud.
But seriously, if this happens, I may finally get to see Indian films with no songs in it. I mean ..... come on!! situation songs like the one that goes along the scenes are fine! But a dramatic song popping right in the middle of the film in a totally different location that covers most of the film's expenses is way too cheesy and damn damn damn boring!!! I wish these creative filmmakers can get their minds straight and stop spending their budget in creating musicals. No one asked for a strict three hour film for you to include not one not two but more than 4 songs. Just like I'm gonna put an end to my article, I really hope to see an end to these musicals before I rest in peace.
All those unwanted item songs in between a serious plot must definitely have affected you!!! Bold statement
keep your pride cos ill give u the drumroll. amazing work :)
Nice article,
👍
The Beginning of your article was quite dramatic but then you proved your point gal....I totally agree that it seems music today somewhere has lost its soul 😒...Drum rolls for that well researched write up dude!!
First of all your start was fantastic and truly got our attention so hats off to you for that.. secondly wonderful article.... especially the background music part because i am binge Watching a lot of hindi serials and epics and i finally understand its importance and how we end up underplaying its role.
