My book for this week: “ Heads you Win" I was looking for a very light book so that I could start my holidays in a breezy manner and actually get into the mood of reading. So it was with great reluctance that I started this book already having a number of pre-set notions though it was written by my all-time favorite author Jeffry Archer. However, I was proved wrong when I started reading this engrossing tale which in its unique way transports us into two different worlds simultaneously weighing the pros and cons and analyzing how life would be in both these cases. The setting is 20th century Russia and it depicts the life of a young Russian Alexander. He faces the wrath of tyranny and his father is murdered by the KGB, a secret organization when he tries to oppose the despotic rule. Alexander and his mother decided to escape from this oppression and begin a new life with a resolve to come back in the future and fight. However, there are two choices: a ship traveling to America and another to England and only fate will decide their destination. The story then beautifully descends to how life would have been in both these countries, how the start is never rosy, how initially they had to struggle to make ends meet and what it took for these two individuals to transform their lives from clueless immigrants to reach the top of the pinnacle and achieve success in their respective fields. Alex’s mother Elena is a talented chef and she is able to carve a mark for herself in both these countries. While Alex becomes a successful entrepreneur in America, he joins the liberals and has a doting political career in England. In both cases, Alex anticipates coming back to Russia and that is where his life intertwined with his counterpart. With an unanticipated twist at the end, the story leaves the readers in a split and it takes some time for the essence to set in. With his beautiful language and enchanting writing style, Jeffry Archer once again spreads his magic through his words and enthralls his readers with this amazing book. Freedom to choose and democracy are the two principles that outlay throughout the book and the author makes it crystal clear that these two ingredients are necessary for the efficient functioning of any country. While the book was a bestseller, it didn't receive the anticipated response for many couldn't make out what the author wished to convey. But for me, this book is a definite must read and it is a treat for all Jeffry Archer fans. Happy reading folks!
Even if it is a grocery list of Jeffrey Archer, it's a must read as he is one author who writes English as it should be written even today
Heads you win ....is indeed a good read as Archer never disappoints!
