Changing the mindset of Indians a vicious circle !!

this week the international rating agency Moody's downgraded India's sovereign debt ratings and made the outlook negative. the same agency had upgraded India's ratings in 2017. the government had highlighted this achievement back then. this time the downgrade met with radio silence and only the COVID-19 news-making comebacks again and again. this proves to be just another piece of evidence that proves our economy is in a bad shape but it is not just due to the coronavirus lockdown. Moody's statement read and I quote " While today's action is taken in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, it was not driven by the impact of it. Rather the pandemic amplifies vulnerabilities in India's credit profile that were present and building before the shock. " the key reasons for moody's negative view were 1)lack of enough reforms in the private sector to boost private investment 2)poor implementation of stated politics 3) stress in the financial sector 4)an inability to control the spending leading rise to rise deficits and debts. the most unflattering line in the statement is " Governance is material to India's credit profile and a material factor in today's downgrade " Indian citizens just don’t care about the economy. Deface a temple, a mob will come after you. Teach Pakistan a lesson, millions will cheer you. Talk about the economy, people shrug, yawn, and switch channels. Politicians mirror what people want. It isn’t about one person or even one government. When people start caring, leaders start caring.

Why don't Indians care for the economy? it is a confounding and fascinating question to answer. maybe Indians are not just ambitious enough, though we may say we are ambitious but at the core, the answer remains to be answered by the individual. maybe we believe in fate a lot, the often-heard phrase "sab Bhagavan pe chod do " can god fix the Indian economy, can he improve India's degrading lifestyle standards remains a question to be answered by every bhakt who prays in the morning to his superpower. My mom always told me one thing while growing up " pray to the power and not the statue if the power feels you have done your combination of hard work with determination surely it will grant you whatever you need ". but the case with the majority is " Bhagavan Mujhe yeh de do voh de do " even science agrees with me newton's third law of motion " every action has an equal and opposite reaction " this will be decided only by the amount of work you do, but us Indians read the newspaper and say only one thing " the government is incompetent, they just loot our money " but no one wants to even want to address the question if they have done anything. I am not trying to justify the wrongs of the government but am trying to alarm the people of what they should be doing . every Indian's mindset at the current scenario is if I have tasty food and a bed to sleep I am rich enough let's stop. Sadly the net result of this economic empathy will be seen in the coming years .we We will have an entirely underemployed generation. you can continue to get a graduate in India for less than 7500rs or $100 which is the minimum wage McDonald's flipper makes in the US in one eight hour shift . as we become a nation of underpaid and underutilized clerks, as jobs dry up, hopefully, the youth currently busy with their smartphones might wake up... the government, whichever the political dispensation, is anti-business. This is a strong statement. I am sure many in the government will rush to deny it. They will cite their favorite phrase – ‘ease of doing business.’ In the eyes of the government, ease of doing business is an entrepreneur having tea and Marie biscuits with an IAS officer, where the latter allows the entrepreneur to do business. ‘See, where is the problem? India has ease of doing business,’ is what they will say. However, ease of business is not ‘I, with power, am letting you do business easily.’ Ease of business happens when ‘I, even with my power, can’t easily stop or harm your business.’ This mental switch is impossible for our power wielders. In our ingrained caste-like mindset, business sits below netas and babus. In the US, the president openly sparred with the CEO of Twitter. The Twitter CEO knew that no matter what, the president cannot damage his business. Can you imagine that in India? Until that ‘I can’t hurt your business come what may’ comes from the netas and babus, doing business in India is never going to be easy. lastly, an issue that needs to be administered by the education ministry. INNOVATION something so important as that is not ingrained in Indians through education. we students are asked to produce whatever present in the reader and write. the idea of innovation is missing from education as such. this is an issue that might bring a lot of change to India's future but if the officials consider then only something as huge as education reform is possible. India’s economy has not been in such a bad state for decades. If we don’t fix it, the next generation will suffer terribly. All of us – people, government and business owners – have to make drastic changes to our mindsets if we want to bring India’s economy back on track

It was a very well written article with powerful arguments presented and the truth of our economy highlighted in a very clever manner. I totally agree, if a change is to be brought, it needs to start from the grassroot level ie. The need to Bring a change in the mindset of the people. Kudos writer.
