Hi guys,
Earth here. Right, I was anticipating this reaction( the fed up expression on your faces) and I do feel sorry for you trust me. You all must have finally (with great difficulty) finished scrolling through the hundred odd messages with the earth day just having passed by, all poking your conscience, making you realize that you seldom fulfil your responsibility, the one towards me. At the end of it you stand confused( or sit confused whatever) and you make these one day vows( which are going to be forgotten by evening) again not at all having a concrete idea about how you are going to proceed and more importantly maintain your plans .
Let me make this point crystal clear: neither am I generalising nor am I playing a blame game and putting you in a guilt trap. I love you all and everyday I proudly reflect about how my children are my identity. You have toiled so much to reach where you are now and I cherish watching all of you working with this extraordinary power and spirit that never rests till it reaches its destiny. Yes I have received a blow here and there as a consequence of your actions ( carbon emission, global warming, pollution , water crisis) an endless list basically but I don't take that into account for now as I know that at the end of the day, it is worth it all.
Drop in pollution level in China
However there are two things that I have been against right from the start: terrorism and climate change. The former shatters people, burying their hopes and aspirations and the latter has the capability of destroying huge nations. This corona virus( that idiot who is causing misery) is infact an opportunity to flatten the curve of global warming and take me back to where I was. Major cities like Delhi, Seoul and Wuhan have shown a 60% reduction in their carbon emissions. Rivers and swamps are back to life again, people are finally getting to know what it is to breathe clean and fresh air, trees are now fully active thanks to the fact that they remain unharmed and birds are establishing their glory by enchanting us with their melodious voice.
The sad fact remains that most of you still have no time to notice this as you are either busy on the roads fighting the virus out or confined to your homes working your minds out. Even developed countries don't pay much attention to climate change. For instance, in the US, broadcast networks only aired 238 minutes about the climate crisis throughout 2019 and this accounts for just 0.7% of their total broadcast. On the other hand your nations are busy fighting and blaming one another for the pandemic and this in a way diverts the attention from pressing issues that really matter.
Yes tackling the pandemic should be your first and your most important priority at the moment but all I am asking is a little care, attention and time. Do bear with me as I delve into certain facts( boring yes) in order to make my message clear.
This is an unprecedented opportunity for countries to reduce their carbon emissions. Infact you are all in a safe path currently and if this continues, by 2030 the impact of global warming can reduce by 50%. However this is not just a utopian vision but also a highly impractical one. Countries have to get back to normalcy, restore their economy and industries but most importantly the production chain also has to pick up. I understand ; the situation currently is like starting a bike which hasn't been put into use for such a long time.
One more sad fact is that even though the baby steps that you take definitely stimulate a start, effective change can only occur when larger organisations and governments take continuous and concerted efforts to tackle the adverse effects of climate change. Elizebath Sawin the President of The Climate Interactive wisely said: "both the pandemic and the climate crisis are the problems of exponential growth against a limited capacity of scope."
Constant action is definitely needed folks!
Hey stop thinking that I am being completely antagonistic. See one positive aspect (reassuring you here) is that this pandemic and the climate change need to be handled in a very similar manner. Before you think I have gone mad, let me clarify. Both are global crisis. Both need a very prompt approach at an early stage itself. Countries like South Korea where pollution has been a “ social disaster" have in a month shown tremendous reduction in pollution levels. Countries need to take advantage of the current situation and work towards sustainable measures and solutions. However the biggest problem is that even now you lack the seriousness and the dedication that is needed to handle this.
Now people if you are going to continue doing things the way it was done earlier then doom is certainly awaiting your entry.( Disclaimer: the below is not for the faint hearted.
1) Average global sea levels are sure to increase by 7- 23 inches by the end of the century. Indonesia has already started facing the brunt of it. Jakarta, home to around 10 million people and Indonesia's capital is under the threat of sinking as the sea level continues to increase by about 25 cm every year. Seems like scientists and the government are seriously considering changing the capital.....
2) Two- thirds of all the extreme weather events in the last 20 years have been majorly influenced and triggered by your actions and your lifestyle. ( at least serious now guys!)
3)More than a million species are highly vulnerable to facing extinction in the near future. This is mainly due to disappearing habitats, changing ecosystems and acidifying oceans. A huge shock is that in the last 40 years alone wildlife count has come down by 60%.
Good news: end of my long facts, bad news: the worst disaster is yet to make its arrival. Now that you all know what a proactive fight is ( one good thing this corona has given) I expect my children to do no less in this case as well. I want you to pressurize your local authorities( because that is when atleast some fruitful action takes place) to invest as much as possible to develop
1) green technology to reduce emissions
2) effective climate policies keeping in mind the local geographical conditions
3) increase the usage of renewable forms of energy
4) carefully regulate industries and release norms for the release of their toxic effluents
5) finally( oh god you are so going to hate this) encourage people and ensure that they bring the necessary changes in their lifestyle....
I am confident that it will only be a matter of time before corona ( and i blindly hope climate change) are put under complete quarantine. Bye folks.......
Opening Message 2
Ok thats me again. Wait, wait this time only two lines I promise. Just wanted to reiterate that you have to be the change that you want to see in me. While I can only type essays like this, the key to solve everything lies within you. So put your heart and soul in restoring me back to my pristine form.
Ps. really have to get back at Venus and her stupid jibes by showing her that east or west my children are the best........
Children I didn't randomly pick facts as i have ultra quick access to space net. ( quoting my sources below)
Take care. If you don't fight for what you want, don't cry over what you lose.......
