A Wake Up Call to the Greener Globe!

Do you think the world is revamping now?

I would say yes, as we the humans are staying at home, COVID-19 lockdown has dramatic impact on nature. Pollution levels are low, environment is clean, animals and birds are freely roaming out in the streets of the cities which was once their habitat.

Recent NASA satellite measurements have revealed that there are significant reductions (30%) in air pollution over the major metropolitan areas of the Northeast United States. Similar reductions have been observed in other regions of the world.

Amid the corona virus lockdown, there are photos showing that some of the major rivers becoming clean. Though the government spent crores, took many initiatives programmes like Namami Gange Programme, Ganga Action Plan etc., to protect the major rivers of India, the rivers did not show much difference like what it had shown now. This is due to the closing of factories and small scale manufacturing units which dump a large amount of sewage every day in the river.

Studies says that if there would be decrease in the amount of sewage dumped, the rivers can get their lives back by becoming more clean. Also the dissolved oxygen level in the rivers has rose up! This should be continued even after the lockdown, the factory wastes should not be dumped simply, it should be made compulsory for all factories to treat the waste products and make it a cleaner one. Now, in places such as Haridwar and Rishikesh there has been a significant increase in the quality of the water. Coliform, a group of bacteria, whose presence in water indicates the contamination of water has decreased.

So it is not only rivers and pollution level dropping down, the animals and birds are freely roaming out! Nowadays I am able to hear different birds sound when I stand in my balcony which I never heard before this pandemic. They are just happy! And also there has been many cases where the animals have been on the roads, a very interesting thing to note here is an endangered animal seen on the Kerala roads to believed that it is Malabar Civet (it is not confirmed yet!). Seeing those pictures makes me feel that it is because of us, the humans, that animals are forbidden from the way they want to live. I would say that it is because of our greed they are suffering.

The scientists are insisting us for a sustainable development but don’t you think this our nature has been sustaining during this pandemic without any efforts. Now it’s time to think. To all the readers, I just wanted to ask something, are we going to perform our own work without paying any attention to regenerate this earth or do we have responsibility to perform our work by not disturbing the nature and have a sustained earth. Knowing the sustainable development goals is a must for all the people and we need to try our best to fulfill it by 2030. Nature has started healing and it should continue with the help of good policies. Let the animals and birds have their own habitat and happy life-like us.

If the mother Earth gave us a beautiful place to live, then don’t you think it is our duty to make it even more beautiful. We should make our world a better place to live, it is for you and for me and for the entire human race.

Every person is the right person to act, every moment is the right moment to begin”.

The Time to Act is Now!”
