A Wedding Story

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

Hi, I'm Mark and this is how I fell in love for the first time.

I was bored to death at my aunt’s wedding, just sitting there waiting for my girlfriend. I could see mom up front trying to make last-minute adjustments to the decorations. Dad was circling around stiffly with his hands stuck deep into his pockets. Knowing my dad, he was probably confused whether he was supposed to act like a host or a guest.

Just then I felt an arm slide through mine.

“Oh thank God you’re here Jenn, I was desperately bored!”

She smiled at me and I felt something explode in my heart. It was so strange because Jenn and I had been together for a year now but it was like I was noticing everything about her for the first time, her hair, her smile, the dress, even her nose. How had I missed all this for an entire year?

The wedding ceremony went by like a daydream and I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jenn. As the bride and groom made their vows to each other, I was busy making promises too, with as much gravity a fourteen-year-old can muster. I was looking into those emerald eyes and realizing that I would never tire of them. I was imagining how great Jenn would look in white at our wedding. I realized I was falling in love for the first time, out of nowhere. I could see an understanding dawn in her eyes too.

When the ceremony got over and the wedding cake was cut, I took Jenn’s hands in mine and cleared my throat. I had to tell her how I felt.

“Mark, I need to go now.”

“Like now?” I whined.

“Yes, I’ll explain later, I have to leave.”

Five minutes later, I was standing around, totally aimless, just like before Jenn came. My phone beeped and I saw that I had several text messages from Jenn and I ducked under a table to read them.

Mark, this wedding has given me beautiful clarity. (‘Oh, me too Jenn’)

I had to leave because it was so overwhelming. When the bride and the groom were saying their vows, I was thinking about you Mark.

When they said “to have and hold, from this day forward”…...I remembered how you kept forgetting to catch me during the dance practice. You dropped me ten times, you dingbat.

When they said “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer” I remembered the time when you made me pretend to break-up with you, so that the waiter at Mc Donald’s would give you a free milkshake out of sympathy. Well, that was just pathetic.

And finally when they said “in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part”

I remembered when you had that flu, and you were jealous that I didn’t. So you deliberately sneezed on me and I was sick for weeks.

I realized I couldn’t wait to part from you. So I ran from there as soon as I could. Goodbye Mark.

P.S: Keep your future girlfriends away from weddings maybe.
