Racism, the act of “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race…”, is a major problem today. It gives people fear, doubt, shame, and sometimes guilt. In addition, racism gives people an awful perspective of life and sometimes, if one is looking up to a racist, the racist’s point of view begins to alter the person’s judgement. Racism could also lead to great conflict arising from those who heavily despise that race and maybe even mass killings, which foreshows that racism needs to be stopped and ended completely. This time it was over George Floyd, who suffocated after a white Minneapolis police officer jammed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes while three other officers either held him down or looked on. Floyd is the latest link in a long chain of deaths and injuries involving police: Rodney King, Malice Wayne Green, Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Philando Castile, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, among them.Like so many people, I was dumbfounded and horrified and outraged by the video of George Floyd slowly being murdered, basically, at a point where he was outnumbered by police officers, handcuffed, subdued on the ground, and basically begging for his life. We watched him slowly, casually, be killed by a group of police officers. And I find it horrifying and numbing.Even then, white Americans seem to have reason to believe what the police did was, right indeed. In a world where killing has become normal, alcohol has become common and drugs have become legal, there’s not much to say about this either. It may seem hard to believe or even digest but it is a fact that our world remains the same and we don’t have much hope of changing it unless another Martin Luther King is born ,which is highly improbable. This distopian world is not something I imagined of facing when I was young. In today’s world suicide has become normal, and people committing crimes are walking free and this is not something our children need to face when they grow up so…….Let’s try and reduce crimes, if not racist crimes and let’s make our children’s future if not ours, a place worth living.
